Elvis and Back: The Journey

Here's the plan: one wife, two kids, two weeks.  Packed into our new Honda Fit.  From Boston, to the Jersey Shore (to visit my parents), to Memphis, to Niagara Falls, and home.  While I've been to Graceland once before (one of the highlights of my college years), my family has not, and I see it as my duty to take them on this pilgrimage.  We're making no reservations, planning only to follow our hearts and the Rand McNally Atlas, and see as much as we can see in the time we have.

We've been doing research for this trip for the past month, but I'm VERY open to suggestions.

Here's our plan:

We've never done a two week trip with the kids.  And YES, we do have a dvd player that we can hook up in the back seat.  My son Zach (8) loves BBQ ribs and the blues (really!), and my daughter Emily (12) loves amusement parks and any place with water, so we'll be on the look out for those things.  No museums!  Roadside oddities, for sure.  Lots of motel 6's, I suspect.

Suggestions?

  1. Very exciting! I went to School in Memphis, Rhodes College. The campus is beautiful. For Ribs try The Rendezvous http://www.hogsfly.com/TheRestaurant.php It was a bit pricey on my limited student budget, but well worth it. Also the Mud Island River Park is also great. They also have outdoor concerts. Check the schedule. I fell in love with the Mississippi River. Across the bridge from Memphis is West Memphis, Arkansas. I suggest a drive across the bridge to see the contrast in terrain from the other side of the river. You can also check off another state visited. The bluffs of Memphis are more pronounced from this view. Have a great time. You are a brave man. Four in a Fit. Love it.

  2. You know about Roadfood.com, right? Back when it was only available as a book, I took it with me on a cross-country trip that included Memphis. Great food tips...(and food is the main thing that my brother and I remember from the car trips of our childhood.)

  4. Now this is what family is all about. I say stop at any and all roadside BBQ stands. You can't go wrong with roadside BBQ.
